Montevallo rallies late to defeat Mississippi College 4-3 in softball
Decatur, Miss. — The University of Montevallo edged Mississippi College 4-3 in a tightly contested softball game Tuesday. Montevallo scored four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit and hand the Choctaws their second loss of the Gulf South Conference series.
Mississippi College took an early lead in the first inning after Shelby Samples doubled to right field and scored on an error. The Choctaws extended their advantage in the third inning, with Morgan Lavergne and Samples each collecting hits. Madelyn England drove in Lavergne, and Hadley Lemons added an RBI single, making the score 3-0.
However, Montevallo responded in the sixth inning with a home run from T. Rogers and a series of singles to rally for four runs. B. Benton, R. Tyree, and K. Christoph each drove in runs during the inning, giving the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
Despite multiple scoring opportunities late in the game, Mississippi College was unable to score again. The Choctaws left runners on base in the seventh inning, sealing the victory for Montevallo.
Camryn Bailey pitched a complete game for Mississippi College, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts and four walks. England led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Samples added two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Lavergne also contributed two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Mississippi College now stands at 7-7-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Montevallo improved to 12-3 overall and 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference, with the victory extending their series.
