Montevallo edges Delta State in Gulf South Conference clash

Cleveland, Miss. — The University of Montevallo edged Delta State University 76-69 in Gulf South Conference play Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Montevallo opened with a hot shooting hand, draining eight three-pointers in the first half to take a 48-34 lead at halftime. The Falcons maintained their advantage in the second half, outscoring the Statesmen 28-35, but Delta State mounted a late rally.

The Statesmen cut the deficit to five points late in the game but could not complete the comeback. DaCory Porter led Delta State with 16 points and made key baskets in the paint during the final push. Bryce Clayton scored 15 points, including several timely three-pointers, while Jackson Twombly added 15 points, attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line. Phillip Hughes contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Delta State shot 40% from the field, made 17 of 21 free throws, and held an advantage in second-chance points. The team also forced 11 turnovers and capitalized on fast-break opportunities to stay within striking distance.

Leading the Falcons were Jaylen Curry and Brandon Fussell, each with 20 points. Montevallo connected on 12 three-pointers in the game, including eight in the first half to build their early lead.

With the loss, Delta State moves to 8-11 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The team is scheduled to return to action next week against UAH on Thursday at approximately 7:30 p.m.
