Montevallo defeats Mississippi College 76-54 in men’s basketball

Montevallo defeated Mississippi College 76-54 in a men’s basketball game Wednesday at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Mississippi.

The Falcons started strong, with Jaylen Curry scoring a quick layup to set the tone. The Blue and Gold responded with a three-pointer by Phil Nelson, assisted by DeMarcus Powe, but Montevallo maintained the lead with consistent scoring from Derek Moore and Curry. Curry contributed multiple baskets, including a layup at 17:37, helping the Falcons build an early advantage.

Mississippi College closed the gap with a series of free throws and field goals, but Montevallo’s offensive efficiency kept them ahead. Bryant James’ layup at 8:09 gave the Falcons a 38-31 halftime lead. In the second half, Montevallo extended their advantage with strong offensive plays, starting with a layup from Curry at 19:51, assisted by Moore, and a three-pointer from Tyson Sexton at 19:20.

The Blue and Gold responded with a three-pointer from Tremaine Dixon at 18:35, but James scored back-to-back layups to push the Falcons further ahead. Montevallo’s bench contributed seven points in the second half, helping maintain their momentum. Despite efforts from Josh Holman and others, Mississippi College could not overcome the lead, which grew throughout the half.

Top performers for Mississippi College included Avaughn Johnson with 13 points on perfect free-throw shooting and five rebounds. Phil Nelson added 12 points, two steals, and four assists, while Tremaine Dixon scored seven points with three assists. Josh Holman contributed nine points and four rebounds.

The Choctaws will host AUM on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Mississippi.
