Mississippi Valley State Women’s Basketball Honors Senior Players Before Texas Southern Game
ITTA BENA, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University’s women’s basketball program will honor its five senior and graduate players during Saturday’s doubleheader against Texas Southern. The ceremony takes place between the two games at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
The Devilettes will face Texas Southern, which enters the game with a 9-17 overall record and a 5-9 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Tigers lead the series 23-6 since the 2010-11 season, with their last victory over Mississippi Valley coming on Jan. 8 in Houston.
Among those recognized are seniors Desiree Smith, Janiya Jones, and Caiside Snapp, along with graduate students Nairobi Lewis and Ariel Jefferson. The players have contributed significantly to the team this season and over their careers.
Desiree Smith, a forward from Fayetteville, North Carolina, has played 12 games this season, averaging 7.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Janiya Jones, a guard from Olive Branch, Mississippi, has appeared in 24 games, averaging 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds, while Caiside Snapp, a guard from Joliet, Illinois, has played 12 games, averaging 0.5 points per game.
Nairobi Lewis, a center from Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, has started 15 of 23 games, averaging 6.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. Ariel Jefferson, a forward from Arkansas Baptist, has played 24 games, averaging 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, earning SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors on Jan. 6. The team and players will be recognized before tip-off at 3 p.m. local time.
