Mississippi Valley State Sweeps Alcorn State in SWAC Baseball Doubleheader

Mississippi Valley State swept Alcorn State in a SWAC Baseball doubleheader Wednesday at Willie E. ‘Rat’ McGowan Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi. The Delta Devils won 6-5 in 10 innings in the opener and 15-8 in the nightcap, improving their overall record to 9-18 and conference record to 5-6.

In the first game, Cody Leming drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with a single to center field, lifting MVSU over Alcorn. Johnny Escobalez Jr. drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before Leming’s hit. Logan Darnell earned the win with a scoreless bottom of the 10th, improving to 1-3.

Both teams exchanged leads early. MVSU built a 5-1 advantage through three innings, aided by several Alcorn errors. The Braves rallied in the seventh and eighth innings, tying the game at 5-5 on a triple by Jamir Hollway and a wild pitch, sending the game into extras. Hollway finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Bennett was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The second game saw Isreal Ramos hit two home runs and drive in six runs, while Ty Burns added a grand slam as MVSU scored 15 runs. The Delta Devils took control early, with Ramos’s homers helping expand their lead. Alcorn scored first but could not keep pace, as MVSU’s offense exploded in the third and seventh innings.

Lucas Valencia earned the win for Mississippi Valley State, allowing three earned runs over three innings. José Cherena took the loss for Alcorn, surrendering seven runs in three innings. The sides are set to meet again Thursday for the series finale at noon.
