Mississippi Valley State Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Alcorn State

LOMAR, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep against Alcorn State on Wednesday at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium. The Diamond Devils won Game 1 in 10 innings, 6-5, using small-ball tactics, and took Game 2, 15-8, with a power display featuring three home runs.

In the opening game, Valley’s Cody Leming, Kendall Brookins, and Johnny Escoblaez Jr. each singled twice, walked twice, and combined to score five runs, steal four bases, and drive in one RBI. Escoblaez stole three bases and scored three times. Logan Darnell earned the win with six shutout innings, allowing only three earned runs while striking out three. Luke Richard pitched seven strong innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three, in 78 pitches.

Game 2 saw Isreal Ramos hit two home runs, including a two-run shot and a three-run blast, driving in six RBIs and scoring four runs. Ty Burns hit a grand slam for his first home run at MVSU. Chris Soeder reached base four times, scoring each time, while Eric Williams drew three walks. Valley’s offense was patient, ending the game with 13 walks, and accumulated 15 runs on 11 hits.

The Diamond Devils now stand at 9-18 overall and 5-6 in SWAC play. They can reach a .500 record in conference if they win one more game against Alcorn State at noon Thursday. The teams have a series history of 166 wins for Alcorn and 99 for Valley, with the Braves’ last win occurring on March 20, 2024.
