Mississippi University for Women Track and Field Sets Three School Records at Bulldog Alumni Relays
STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women track and field teams competed at the Bulldog Alumni Relays at Mississippi State University from March 26 to 28. The meet, which featured predominantly NCAA Division I athletes, was a non-scoring event for the team but yielded three school records for MUW.
On Thursday, freshman James Nesby set a new school record in the men’s hammer throw. Nesby, competing in his first hammer event for MUW, threw 34.17 meters (112 feet, 2 inches), surpassing his previous record of 30.87 meters (101 feet, 4 inches) set last week. He became the first MUW athlete to compete in the event.
On Friday, freshman Ariella Jones improved her own school record in the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.66 meters (18 feet, 7 inches). Jones finished eighth among 31 competitors at the meet, held at Mississippi State. Also on Friday, men’s high jumper Malachi Morgan cleared 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches), finishing fifth out of 15 athletes, though he did not surpass his own school record.
The final school record was set Saturday by sophomore transfer Nick Martin in the men’s javelin throw. Martin recorded a personal best of 46.37 meters (152 feet, 2 inches) on his first attempt, taking the school record from teammate Noel Kellum, who had thrown 46.29 meters (151 feet, 11 inches) in 2022.
The team will continue its season with upcoming meets as they aim to build on these performances.
