Mississippi State Women’s Tennis Tops South Carolina in Home Finale

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State women’s tennis defeated No. 25 South Carolina 4-0 in its home finale Thursday, marking the program’s first top-25 win since 2021. The victory also represented the Bulldogs’ first time reaching four conference wins in a season since 2019, according to athletic communications.

MSU set the tone early by taking the doubles point. No. 37 Athina Pitta and Gianna Oboniye won on court two, 6-4, over Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova. Carolina Troiano and Emma Cohen clinched the point on court three, with a 6-3 win over Sara Borkop and Jane Dunyon.

The Bulldogs carried that momentum into singles play, winning three matches to secure the sweep. Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz beat Helena Buchwald 6-3, 6-3, on court two. Chiara Di Genova defeated Borkop 6-4, 6-4, on court three, while Mia Robinson topped Taylor Goetz 6-2, 6-2 on court four.

Post-match celebrations honored graduate Alessia Tagliente, who has accumulated 33 singles wins and 37 doubles wins over her career. She earned multiple honors, including the 2025 ITA Southern Regional Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award and ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition. Tagliente also excelled academically, earning SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll honors.

Mississippi State (14-7, 4-4 SEC) will conclude its regular season Saturday at Georgia. The team’s next match is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Athens, Georgia.
