Mississippi State women’s tennis opens season with doubleheader sweep

Mississippi State women’s tennis opened its season with a doubleheader sweep Sunday in Starkville. The Bulldogs defeated UAB 7-0 in the morning match and followed with a 6-1 win against Samford in the afternoon, according to the team’s reports.

In the first match, State took an early lead by winning the doubles point with pairs Athina Pitta and Mia Robinson, as well as Emma Cohen and Thessy Ntondele Zinga. The Bulldogs then secured singles victories from Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz, Thessy Ntondele Zinga, and Pitta.

Against Samford, State again claimed the doubles point, with doubles victories from Pitta/Robinson and Chiara Di Genova. Four Bulldogs earned their second singles wins of the day, including freshmen Ntondele Zinga and Robinson, who both achieved their first collegiate dual match wins in singles and doubles.

State remains undefeated against Samford, extending its winning streak to 12 matches. The team is now 19-5 in doubleheaders under head coach Chris Hooshyar, according to the program.

The Bulldogs will travel to Norfolk, Virginia, next weekend to face Old Dominion at 1 p.m. and Norfolk State at 5 p.m., as part of their upcoming schedule.
