Mississippi State Women’s Tennis Hosts Top-Ranked Oklahoma in Three-Match Home Stretch

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State women’s tennis remains at home this week for a ranked matchup and its sixth doubleheader of the season. The Bulldogs will host No. 9 Oklahoma on March 19 at 3 p.m., followed by matches against No. 50 Arkansas and Southern Mississippi on March 21 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

Mississippi State enters the week following a 4-0 conference win over Missouri. The team is ranked No. 49 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association standings.

Three doubles pairings represent the Bulldogs in the ITA rankings. Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz are ranked No. 22, Chiara Di Genova and Kempenaers-Pocz are No. 55, and Athina Pitta and Oboniye debut at No. 52. Pitta and Oboniye have recorded two ranked wins this season, defeating Texas and Vanderbilt.

Under coach Hooshyar, Mississippi State has a 23-match winning streak in non-conference play and a 25-7 record in doubleheaders. Oklahoma, ranked No. 9, enters the week on a five-match winning streak, including victories over three ranked opponents, two in the top 10. Their recent wins include sweeps against No. 7 LSU and Oral Roberts.

The Bulldogs will aim to earn their first victory against Oklahoma in only their second meeting in series history. Arkansas, ranked No. 50, is coming off a home loss to Ole Miss. The Razorbacks have defeated Mississippi State each year since 2019, with the last Bulldog win in Fayetteville in 2018. Southern Mississippi will face Southern on March 19 before traveling to Starkville for Saturday’s match. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 0-4 loss to UTSA. Mississippi State has won 24 consecutive matches against Southern Mississippi and seeks to extend that streak.
