Mississippi State Women’s Tennis Hosts Four Matches at A.J. Pitts Tennis Center
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State women’s tennis is scheduled to host four non-conference matches at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center this weekend, including two doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday, according to athletic communications.
The Bulldogs will face Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. and Alcorn State at 4 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, they will play Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. and Bellarmine at 3 p.m. State enters the weekend after three matches were canceled due to weather, according to the department.
Under head coach Chris Hoosyar, the team boasts a 22-3 record over his first two seasons. The Bulldogs opened this season with wins against UAB and Samford. Doubles duo Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz are ranked No. 9 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. They finished last fall ranked seventh but have yet to finish a doubles match this season.
This weekend marks Georgia Southern’s first visit to Starkville and just their second meeting overall. The Bulldogs won their first encounter 7-2 in 1984. MSU has an undefeated record of 10-0 against Alcorn State, including a 7-0 win last season, with Athina Pitta and Oboniye leading the doubles effort. Returners Alessia Tagliente and Chiara Di Genova also contributed singles victories in that match.
Louisiana Tech is returning to Mississippi State for the first time since 1986. The Bulldogs hold a 4-1 series lead, with their last meeting ending in a 6-0 victory. LA Tech recently defeated Southeast Missouri 5-2. Bellarmine will travel from Bowling Green after playing Friday, and MSU defeated the Knights 4-0 last season, securing the doubles point early and finishing with singles wins from Oboniye and Di Genova.
During the weekend, fans can participate in a Valentine’s Day dinner giveaway at Taste for Two. For more updates, visit HailState.com or follow the team on X, Instagram, and Facebook under the handle “HailStateWT.”
