Mississippi State Women’s Golf Opens Moon Golf Invitational in Florida
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State women’s golf has started its spring schedule at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida. The three-day tournament began Sunday, with the Bulldogs fielding the same lineup as in their spring opener at the UCF Challenge.
In that event, State finished as runners-up at 20-under par, tying the program’s fourth-best 54-hole score. Avery Weed, the nation’s top-ranked collegiate golfer, leads the Bulldogs once again. She has averaged 69.2 this season and shot par or better in 10 consecutive rounds heading into the tournament. Weed finished second individually at 8-under last time out.
Ines Belchior, a freshman from Lisbon, Portugal, is second in the lineup. She finished 6-under at the UCF Challenge, shooting under par in all three rounds — a first in her career. Belchior’s second-round score in the 60s made her the 10th Bulldog freshman in program history to record multiple rounds in the 60s in a single season.
Samantha Whateley, ranked 62nd nationally, is in the middle of the lineup. She finished even par at the UCF Challenge and secured her seventh top-20 individual finish. Moa Stridh, who placed T10 at 5-under, is next. She shot par or better in all three rounds for the first time and now has six rounds under par, ranking her 10th among freshmen in program history.
Izzy Pellot rounds out the Bulldogs’ five-player lineup. A consistent contributor, Pellot will become the tenth player in program history to complete all three rounds of a tournament in Florida.
