Mississippi State Women’s Golf Moves Old Barnwell Derby Match Play to Sunday Due to Weather
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State women’s golf team will begin the Old Barnwell Derby Match Play in Aiken, South Carolina, on Sunday instead of Monday, citing forecasted inclement weather. The Bulldogs will face No. 17 Ole Miss in the opening round at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, marking their first match play event of the season.
In match play, players compete hole-by-hole against opponents rather than counting strokes relative to par. The team with the most hole victories after 18 wins the match. The winner of this match will advance to face either Alabama or No. 5 Auburn in the second round scheduled for approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The tournament concludes Tuesday morning.
Avery Weed and Izzy Pellot lead the Bulldogs in match play experience, having competed in 13 rounds each. Weed has a 7-3-2 record, while Pellot is 5-7-1. Samantha Whateley has also participated in eight rounds, with a 2-6 record. All three will be in the lineup for this week’s matches. Ines Belchior and Moa Stridh will compete in their first collegiate match play tournaments, starting Sunday. Lynn van der Sluijs will also participate in her first match play as an individual.
