Mississippi State tops Lipscomb 8-3 in baseball opener
Mississippi State opened its series against Lipscomb with an 8-3 victory Thursday at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 4, improved to 12-2 on the season, while Lipscomb fell to 6-6.
Both teams exchanged zeroes through the first five innings before Lipscomb took a 1-0 lead in the sixth on Blake Carter’s double that scored Aaron Stelogeannis. Mississippi State responded immediately, with Drew Wyers homering to tie the game. The Bulldogs then scored five runs in the inning, including an RBI single from Gehrig Frei and a throwing error on a bunt that allowed two runs to cross.
Wyers added a second home run in the seventh, and Ryder Woodson’s solo shot in the eighth extended the lead to 8-3. Lipscomb made a push with two runs in the eighth on Damion Kenealy Jr.’s double but couldn’t close the gap. Mississippi State pitcher Ryan McPherson earned the win, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over six innings.
Ben Davis pitched the final five outs for his second save. Wyers finished with two hits, including two home runs and two RBIs. Reese, Sullivan, and Chance each contributed two hits for the Bulldogs. Lipscomb was led by Stelogeannis, who had three hits, and Kenealy Jr., who drove in two runs.
The series continues Friday at 6 p.m., with Lipscomb’s Collin Bosley-Smith starting on the mound against the tentative pitching plans of Mississippi State, according to team sources. Fans can follow updates on the Bulldogs’ social media channels and at www.HailState.com.
