Mississippi State splits Saturday doubleheader at Tiger Invitational, faces Clemson in rematch
Clemson, S.C. — No. 12 Mississippi State split a doubleheader at the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, defeating Georgia Southern 8-0 before falling to No. 25 Clemson 3-0.
In the first game, the Bulldogs (17-2) set a program record for wins in February with 17, including a three-run third inning that featured a home run by Kiarra Sells. Abby Grace Richardson added a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth. Nadia Barbary contributed a two-run double in the same inning. Peja Goold pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing only one hit.
In the second game, Clemson took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. The Tigers added a third run in the fourth on a double by Julia Knowler. Mississippi State struggled offensively, going 0-for-8 with runners on base in the game.
Mississippi State head coach Samantha Ricketts praised her players’ efforts. She highlighted Morgan Stiles’ consistent performance and Goold’s strong pitching, noting that Goold was working on adjusting her changeup. Ricketts also emphasized the importance of making in-game adjustments and maintaining a mature approach at the plate.
The Bulldogs and Tigers will meet again Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT in the tournament’s championship game, which will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Mississippi State aims to avenge its loss and secure the tournament title.
