Mississippi State softball pitcher Faircloth strikes out 14 in win over New Mexico

WACO, Texas — Alyssa Faircloth struck out 14 batters, a career high, as No. 22 Mississippi State defeated New Mexico 8-1 Saturday morning in softball action. The win completed a perfect weekend for the Bulldogs at the Getterman Classic, improving their record to 4-0.

Faircloth’s performance ranks fourth in MSU history for strikeouts in a game, and her pitching kept the Lobos off balance throughout. The only run allowed came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, ending Faircloth’s streak of dominance on the mound, according to MSU head coach Samantha Ricketts.

Offensively, Morgan Stiles opened the scoring with a home run on the third pitch of the game. Seven of the first nine Bulldogs reached base safely, and Morgan Bernardini drove in two runs with a single. Anna Carder added a sacrifice fly to give MSU a four-run lead before the Lobos took their turn at bat.

MSU scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, with Carder earning her second RBI of the game. Gabby Schaeffer recorded her first career RBI, and Des Rivera contributed a sacrifice fly. Kiarra Sells scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Coach Ricketts praised her team’s aggressive approach and veteran leadership. She highlighted the contributions of players like Morgan Stiles, Nadia Barbary, and Kiarra Sells, noting their ability to get on base and drive in runs. Trenton Troutman and Anna Carter also received praise for their confident at-bats.

Faircloth reflected on her outing, saying her goal was to stay loose and trust her pitches, especially her changeup, which was working well. The Bulldogs will host Southern Miss on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in their home opener, kicking off a 12-game homestand.
