Mississippi State Pulls Off Historic Upset Over No. 4 Stanford in Men’s Tennis

Dallas, Texas — Mississippi State (No. 6) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat No. 4 Stanford 4-3 Sunday at the ITA National Indoor Championship. The Bulldogs secured their first-ever victory over Stanford, improving to 8-1 this season, according to team officials.

After Stanford’s Alexander Razegghi and Jagger Leach won their singles matches, the Bulldogs responded with four straight wins to clinch the match. Bryan Hernandez Cortes, Jovanovic, Mario Martinez Serrano, and Benito Sanchez Martinez each secured singles victories in the comeback effort.

In doubles, Stanford’s Razegghi and Alex Chang defeated Sanchez Martinez and Jovanovic to take the doubles point. Mississippi State’s head coach, Matt Roberts, moved within one win of becoming the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories, with his 220th career win, according to team sources.

Both Jovanovic and Martinez Serrano earned ranked singles wins, and all four Bulldogs who played singles recorded victories. The win marked Mississippi State’s second consecutive season defeating a top-five opponent.

The Bulldogs now prepare to open SEC play against Vanderbilt at 12 p.m. Feb. 21 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
