Mississippi State beats Auburn 91-85 behind record-breaking performance by Hubbard
Mississippi State earned a 91-85 victory over Auburn on Wednesday night at Humphrey Coliseum, led by a historic performance from Josh Hubbard. Hubbard set school records with 10 three-pointers and scored a career-high 46 points, narrowly missing the school’s single-game scoring record.
The Bulldogs started strong, with Hubbard hitting three early three-pointers to give State a 21-6 lead. Hubbard added more threes and a fastbreak layup, pushing the lead to 29-18. The first half ended with Mississippi State ahead 49-33.
After the break, Auburn mounted a comeback, trimming the deficit to 56-54 with 12 minutes remaining. The Tigers took their first lead of the game at 64-63 with 8:50 left. They extended their advantage to 80-73 with just under four minutes remaining, but State responded.
Hubbard tied the game at 82-82 with a layup at 1:11. After Auburn took a brief lead, Hubbard hit his 10th three-pointer to put Mississippi State ahead 85-83. Down the stretch, free throws from Ja’Borri McGhee and Shawn Jones Jr. sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
Hubbard’s performance was notable not only for the points but also for his first-half scoring, where he accumulated 35 points and made nine three-pointers. His 46 points tied for the second-highest single-game total in school history and marked the most points scored in an SEC conference game since 2020, according to the school.
Mississippi State now prepares to face South Carolina on Saturday at noon, with the game set to air on SEC Network.
