Mississippi College’s Buchanan Named GSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Emily Buchanan of Mississippi College and Mercedes Garcia Cid of Auburn University at Montgomery received the Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards, respectively, for March 2-8, the conference announced.

Buchanan, a junior, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles, defeating the 11th-ranked Yona Bancarel of UT Tyler 6-1, 6-2, and the fifth-ranked Salma Djoubri of Lynn 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). She also teamed with Ann Cabot Stockett to beat Bancarel and Natalia Gorzny of UT Tyler 6-1, and Carla Galmiche and Kristen Younes of Lynn 7-6 (7-5). Other nominees for the award included Melissa Yakup Pour of AUM, Klara Podskubkova of Montevallo and Carmelle Vial of Valdosta State.

Garcia Cid, a freshman, defeated Augusta’s Andrea Gonzalez 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. She also teamed with Allison Blanco to beat Augusta’s Priscilla Landi and Julieta Palma 6-4. No other nominees were listed for the award.

This marks the fourth weekly award for Buchanan in the 2026 season. The conference previously recognized players and freshmen from schools including Valdosta State, West Alabama, Delta State, and West Florida.
