Mississippi College Women Upset No. 2 West Florida in Tennis; Men Narrowly Fall
The Mississippi College women’s tennis team achieved a significant victory Tuesday morning, beating No. 2-ranked West Florida 6-1 at the MC Tennis Complex. In the afternoon, the MC men’s team fought hard but fell 4-3 to the second-ranked Argonauts.
In the women’s match, the Lady Choctaws took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett defeated Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Rocio Martinez and Anna Hudson secured the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Mississippi College dominated the top of the lineup. Buchanan beat Verdu 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Martinez won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Katharina Weber rallied from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Hudson added a straight-sets victory at No. 5, and Stockett finished with a three-set tiebreak, winning 10-8 in the super tiebreak at No. 6.
The victory marked one of the highest-ranked wins in program history and kept the Lady Choctaws unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play.
On the men’s side, Mississippi College’s team pushed No. 2 West Florida to the limit but ultimately fell short. The doubles point was decided at No. 3 doubles, where West Florida edged Hinton and Sergio Ramirez Ocana 7-6. The Choctaws responded with three singles wins, including Florian Walcher at No. 3 and Mikayel Avanesyan at No. 4, both in straight sets, and Sergio Ramirez Ocana at No. 5.
Despite the strong effort, West Florida secured victories at Nos. 1, 2, and 6 singles, clinching the win in a tightly contested match.
The Lady Choctaws will continue their road trip Sunday at 1 p.m. against Arkansas–Fort Smith, with matches scheduled Monday against Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist. The men’s team will also face Arkansas–Fort Smith on Sunday before traveling to Ouachita Baptist on Monday.
