Mississippi College Women Sweep Weekend Tennis Matches in Texas; Men Split

The Mississippi College women’s tennis team secured two victories during a weekend in Tyler, Texas, including a win over Lubbock Christian. The men’s team split their matches against UT Permian Basin and Lubbock Christian, according to school officials.

The Lady Choctaws opened with a dominant 9-0 win against UT Permian Basin, sweeping the doubles point and winning all six singles matches. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett led the doubles effort with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Rune Van Wyk and Katharina Weber (6-2), along with Rocio Martinez Azcarraga and Anna Hudson (6-2), completed the doubles sweep. In singles, Buchanan, Martinez Azcarraga, Van Wyk, Weber, Hudson and Stockett all won in straight sets.

Mississippi College added a 5-2 victory over Lubbock Christian, dropping the doubles point but winning five of six singles matches. Buchanan won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, while Van Wyk and Weber also recorded straight-set wins. Anna Hudson fought through three sets at No. 5, and Stockett finished strong with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 to secure the team win.

On the men’s side, the Choctaws opened with a 4-3 victory over UT Permian Basin. They earned wins in doubles from Mattia Ricci and Matias Ruiz at No. 1 and Sergio Ramirez Ocaña and Joshua Hinton at No. 3. In singles, Ricci, Mikayel Avanesyan, Florian Walcher, Ramirez Ocaña and Lucas Cavalcanti de Carvalho each posted victories.

Against Lubbock Christian, Mississippi College swept the doubles matches but lost a close singles contest after several three-set battles. Ramirez Ocaña and Cavalcanti de Carvalho earned singles wins for the Choctaws. The teams will continue their spring schedules next week as they prepare for Gulf South Conference play.
