Mississippi College Women Remain Perfect in Florida Tennis Matches; Men Split Weekend
The Mississippi College women’s tennis team continued its strong season, winning all three matches in Florida, including victories over Palm Beach Atlantic, Lynn, and Saint Leo, according to school officials.
The Lady Choctaws opened the trip with a 7-0 sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic in Melbourne. They dominated throughout, starting with doubles, where Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Rune Van Wyk and Katharina Weber secured a 6-4 victory at No. 2, and Anna Hudson and Rocio Martinez completed the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win.
In singles action, all six players won in straight sets. Buchanan defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2 at the top spot, while Weber (No. 3), Martinez (No. 2), Van Wyk (No. 4), Hudson (No. 5), and Stockett (No. 6) each won in straight sets to seal the victory.
The Lady Choctaws continued their winning streak with a 6-1 victory over Saint Leo. Buchanan and Stockett opened with a 6-4 doubles win, while Hudson and Martinez secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory. In singles, Buchanan won in three sets, and Martinez, Van Wyk, and Hudson all won in straight sets. Stockett added a point at No. 6 singles to clinch the match.
Mississippi College’s women remain in Florida and are set to face Tampa on Friday. Meanwhile, the men’s team split their matches, earning a 6-1 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic before falling 4-0 to Saint Leo, according to school officials.
The men’s team won the doubles point against Palm Beach Atlantic with victories from pairs Matias Ruiz / Mattia Ricci and Joshua Hinton / Sergio Ramirez Ocana. In singles, Ricci fought for a three-set win at No. 1, and players including Ruiz, Mikayel Avanesyan, Florian Walcher, Sergio Ramirez Ocana, and Lucas de Carvalho each won in straight sets to secure the team victory.
The following day, the Choctaw men faced Saint Leo. The Lions took the doubles point and secured three singles wins, clinching the match with a 4-0 final score. The team will continue its spring schedule as the women prepare for their match against Tampa.
