Mississippi College tops Delta State 69-62 in women’s basketball
CLINTON, Miss. — Delta State University’s women’s basketball team fell to Mississippi College 69-62 Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The Choctaws built an 18–6 lead in the first quarter, setting the tone early. Delta State responded in the second quarter, outscoring MC 19–18 and trimming the deficit to 37–24 at halftime.
The Lady Statesmen continued to chip away in the third, tying the game at 52 entering the final period behind strong inside play and free throws. Delta State’s defense tightened, holding Mississippi College to 15 points in the third quarter and chasing the score.
In the fourth quarter, Delta State scored 20 points and mounted a late rally. However, Mississippi College answered key baskets and free throws to secure the victory by seven points.
Jariyah Williamson led Delta State with 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Bramyia Johnson scored a career-high 11 points off the bench, while Kennedee Shelton added eight. Adyson Roberts was perfect from the field, scoring six points. The Lady Statesmen’s bench contributed 35 points. Delta State shot 37% from the floor and forced 17 turnovers, converting them into 13 points. They also held a 43–36 rebounding edge but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
Delta State moved to 8–8 overall and 6–5 in Gulf South Conference play. The team will next hit the road to face Christian Brothers University in Memphis as conference action continues next week.
