Mississippi College Tennis Teams Sweep Harding in Nonconference Matches
The Mississippi College men’s and women’s tennis teams secured nonconference victories Thursday morning at the MC Tennis Complex, defeating Harding University. The No. 6 Lady Choctaws improved to 16-0 with a 6-1 win, remaining undefeated this season.
Mississippi College claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The duo of Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett, ranked nationally, won 6-2. The team carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches in straight sets.
Buchanan led the women’s team, winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Rocio Martinez, Katharina Weber, Anna Hudson, and Stockett each recorded convincing victories. Mariana Munoz finished the match at No. 6 singles to seal the team victory.
On the men’s side, the No. 13 Choctaws improved to 11-4 with a 6-1 win over Harding. They took the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3, including a 7-6 win from the nationally ranked duo of Matias Ruiz and Mattia Ricci.
After dropping the top singles match, Mississippi College responded with five consecutive wins. Ruiz defeated his opponent 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2, and Florian Walcher won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. Mikayel Avanesyan, Sergio Ramirez Ocana, and Lucas Cavalvanti de Carvalho each posted straight-set victories to complete the dominant victory.
The teams will return to action Saturday, March 28, when the tennis squads travel to Lee University for a Gulf South Conference match, with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.
