Mississippi College Sweeps Christian Brothers in Tennis Season Opener

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams started the 2026 season with convincing wins over Christian Brothers, both securing 7-0 victories in their season openers and Gulf South Conference matches.

The men’s team, now 1-0 overall and in conference play, claimed the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Ricco Ruiz and his partner won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Ramirez and Ocana and Lefort and Avanesyan each posted 6-2 wins to complete the sweep. In singles, the Choctaws did not drop a set, winning all six matches in straight sets. Ricco Ruiz defeated Ben Hannot 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, and Ruiz followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Avanesyan, Ramirez, Ocana, Walcher, and Carya also secured victories, with Walcher winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Carya taking a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 6.

The women’s team, also 1-0 overall and in conference, mirrored the men’s success with a 7-0 win. They secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett won 6-2, and Rune Van Wyk and Katharina Weber rolled to a 6-0 win. The No. 3 doubles match was decided by default. In singles, Mississippi College dominated again. Buchanan won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1, while Rocio Martinez swept 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Anna Hudson and Stockett also won in straight sets, and Wambui Taylor and Mariana Munoz received wins by default at No. 5 and No. 6.

The teams are scheduled to return to action on Feb. 17, hosting Spring Hill College at 1 p.m. CT.
