Mississippi College Softball Splits Doubleheader at Spring Hill, Prepares for Valdosta State Series

Mobile, Alabama — Mississippi College’s softball team split a doubleheader with Spring Hill College on Tuesday at Murray Field. The Choctaws lost the opener 9-7 before rallying for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap, according to team sources.

In the first game, Mississippi College jumped ahead early. Ashlyn Rodgers stole third and scored on a throwing error in the first inning. Spring Hill responded with four runs in the second inning. The Choctaws answered back in the third, with Shelby Samples driving in two runs with a double and Megan Matheis adding an RBI single to tie the game at 4.

Spring Hill regained control with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Mississippi College chipped away at the lead with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Sarah Lee drove in a run in the final inning, but the comeback fell short. Matheis led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Samples added two hits and two RBIs, and Rodgers scored three runs with two stolen bases. Pitcher Camryn Bailey took the loss after allowing nine runs over 4.2 innings, while Grace Wallis pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

In the second game, Reagan Rios pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits to earn her fifth win of the season. Bailey secured her second save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning. Mississippi College scored first in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Kate Rills and an error that allowed another run. Matheis extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with an RBI single. Spring Hill responded with a two-run home run in the sixth but couldn’t complete a comeback against the Choctaw pitching staff. Despite only three hits, Mississippi College capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to secure the win.

The team now prepares for Gulf South Conference action with a three-game series against Valdosta State scheduled for this weekend. The series begins Saturday with doubleheaders at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m., according to team officials.
