Mississippi College Softball Falls to Alabama Huntsville in GSC Series Amid 40-Year Celebration
Clinton, Miss. — Mississippi College dropped a three-game Gulf South Conference series to Alabama Huntsville over the weekend, coinciding with a celebration of 40 years of softball at the MC Softball Complex. The series began Friday with a 7-6 loss for the Choctaws, who led early but couldn’t hold the advantage.
Mississippi College took a 4-0 lead in the first three innings, with RBIs from Blakely Gill and Megan Matheis. The Chargers responded with a four-run fourth inning, including two home runs, and added three more runs in the fifth to take control of the game. The Choctaws made a late rally, including an RBI double from Mary Lem in the sixth, but fell short.
The teams split the series Saturday with a 7-0 victory for Mississippi College in Game 2. Reagan Rios pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out four. The Choctaws scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Gill and an RBI single from Matheis. Ellie Fryar added two hits and scored twice in the win.
In the series finale Saturday, Alabama Huntsville secured a 6-4 victory. The Chargers jumped ahead early before Mississippi College responded with four runs in the sixth to tie the game. Key RBIs from Mary Lem, Hadley Lemons, and Kate Rills fueled the rally. However, UAH scored three runs in the seventh to reclaim the lead and win the series.
Off the field, the weekend marked a milestone celebration for Mississippi College softball. Alumni from four decades returned to honor the program’s history, which includes more than 1,000 victories. Saturday’s festivities highlighted 40 seasons of Choctaw softball and celebrated the legacy of players like the 2016 national championship team, which finished with a program-record 39 wins and went undefeated in tournament play. Members of that team, including Most Outstanding Player Carlie Sargent, were recognized and participated in ceremonies.
The weekend also featured a ceremonial first pitch from Tracey Brewer, the program’s first pitcher, who recorded 69 career wins. Despite the series loss, the event showcased the program’s rich history and ongoing growth. Mississippi College returns next weekend for a three-game series against No. 15 West Florida at home, beginning Friday.
