Mississippi College Baseball Tops Union 15-12 in GSC Opener

Clinton, Miss. — Mississippi College’s baseball team defeated Union 15-12 Friday at Frierson Field in the opening game of their Gulf South Conference series. The Choctaws (8-9, 4-3 GSC) scored six runs in the first inning and totaled a season-high 15 runs in the game, according to school sources.

Five MC players had multiple hits, led by Creek Robertson, Nick Slonaker and JT Thigpen. Slonaker drove in three runs, a career high, while Robertson and Slonaker each added three RBIs. Thigpen contributed two RBIs, including a second-inning homer, his second of the season. Ty Murphy also drove in two runs with a triple and reached three times on walks.

The Choctaws pulled ahead in the seventh inning with a five-run rally that included a leadoff triple by Tyrus Williams, a double by Slonaker, and a run-scoring single from Robertson. The team built a cushion that held off Union’s late rally, which included four runs in the ninth inning. The Blue and Gold’s defense and pitching changes helped secure the win, despite some Bulldog errors in the late innings.

Caleb Peterson earned his second victory of the season, pitching five innings, striking out seven, and allowing seven runs. Union’s Carter Daniel took the loss after surrendering seven runs, six earned, on four hits with five walks in four innings. Union’s pitching staff issued 10 walks in the game.
