Mississippi College Baseball Sweeps Valdosta State in GSC Series
CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College baseball swept Valdosta State in a doubleheader Friday, winning 13-7 and 14-1 in Gulf South Conference action. The victories give the Choctaws an 11th consecutive home series win, according to school officials.
In the first game, MC collected 15 hits and stole a season-high seven bases, the most since Feb. 23, 2020, against Quincy. JT Thigpen led the offense with three hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs. Cade Gadman added two hits, two RBIs, and scored twice. Alex Johnson contributed three RBIs, and Creek Robertson scored three times as the team built a sizable lead in the middle innings.
The game saw an early three-run homer from Valdosta State in the first inning, but MC responded with a five-run second. The teams traded runs through the fifth before the Choctaws pulled away with a three-run sixth and added insurance late. Relief pitcher Blake Gollott earned the win, tossing five shutout innings, allowing two hits, and striking out five. Starter Caleb Peterson gave up seven runs over four innings.
In the nightcap, MC recorded 16 hits and scored 10 runs in the first two innings. Will Langston led with four hits and three RBIs, while Gadman and Robertson each contributed three hits and over two RBIs. Ty Murphy added three hits, including a double, and stole two bases, moving up to eighth on the program’s single-season chart with 21 steals. The Choctaws scored eight runs in the first inning, with RBIs from Johnson, Tyrus Williams, Tyler Sanderson, and Robertson, and a two-run single from Langston to cap the inning.
Pitcher Cooper Cooksey pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks. His strikeout total matched the highest in the Gulf South Conference this season. Valdosta State managed 11 hits in the first game, including two home runs, but could not overcome MC’s consistent scoring. The Blazers scored their only run in the seventh inning of the second game on a double by Luke Flading and a groundout.
The series continues with a game scheduled for Saturday, March 28, beginning at 1 p.m., according to school officials.
