Mississippi College Baseball Sweeps Series Against Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College baseball secured its first conference series win of the season by defeating Montevallo in a doubleheader Friday at Frierson Field. The Choctaws improved to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Gulf South Conference.

In the first game, MC dominated with a 13-3 victory. The team scored in all seven innings, including back-to-back three-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Alex Johnson and Cade Gadman each had three hits, while JT Thigpen, Tyrus Williams and Ty Murphy added two hits apiece. Johnson, Creek Robertson, Tyler Sanderson and Thigpen combined for 10 of the 11 runs scored.

Caleb Peterson earned his first win of the season, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts, eight hits, and one walk. The team totaled a season-high 15 hits, with four going for extra bases. Sanderson and Johnson each hit solo home runs, while Robertson recorded the program’s first triple of the season and Williams added a double.

The second game was a tight contest. Montevallo led 4-1 early, but MC scored four unanswered runs over the next six innings to take a 5-4 walk-off victory. The final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Thigpen to score.

Dylan Cope earned his second win of the season in relief, pitching over two innings and striking out two. Starting pitcher Cooper Cooksey went 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Nick Slonaker contributed an RBI sacrifice fly, and Will Langston hit his third home run of the day, bringing the Choctaws within one. Williams tied the game earlier with a two-run triple that scored Johnson.

The teams will conclude the series Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
