Mississippi College baseball rallies to sweep Montevallo in 10 innings
Clinton, Miss. — Mississippi College baseball rallied to beat Montevallo 4-3 in 10 innings Saturday at Frierson Field inside Dickins-Scoper Stadium. The victory marked the Choctaws’ first sweep of the season, raising their record to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play. Montevallo fell to 5-9 and 1-5 in league games.
MC loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning with no outs, thanks to two walks and a hit by pitch. Ty Murphy then drove in the winning run with an infield single that scored Kelby Jordan. It was Murphy’s only hit of the game. Head coach Jeremy Haworth praised his team for responding after last weekend’s series loss.
“Super proud of our guys responding from last weekend, getting swept in West Alabama,” Haworth said. “Proud of our pitching staff. They did a really good job of throwing a ton of strikes and holding their running game.”
JT Thigpen, Alex Johnson and Cade Gadman each had multiple hits in the comeback victory. Gadman also drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly that tied the game in the sixth inning. Thigpen has now recorded three consecutive multi-hit games.
Gadman’s RBI single in the second inning put MC on the board, and he later tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Kamryn Carlisle earned his second win of the season in relief, pitching a third of an inning and keeping Montevallo off balance. Coby Gollott started on the mound, striking out eight over six innings and allowing just one earned run.
Montevallo took an early 2-0 lead but was tied 2-2 after four innings. The Falcons regained the lead in the fifth with two runs, including an RBI single by Jack Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald led the Falcons offensively with two hits and two RBIs. Bodie Vail took the loss in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one run.
Mississippi College will host Southern Arkansas on Tuesday at 2 p.m. as part of a nine-game homestand.
