Millsaps Women’s Basketball Wins 2026 SAA Championship
MT. BERRY, Ga. — The No. 3 seed Millsaps College women’s basketball team won the 2026 Southern Athletic Association championship by defeating No. 1 seed Trinity University 72-66 Saturday inside the Cage Center.
Millsaps (21-7) secured its second SAA postseason crown in program history and its second in three seasons. The victory earned the Majors an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT Monday at ncaa.com.
In the title game, Millsaps led 46-26 in the paint and forced 23 turnovers, converting those into 21 points. The game featured 12 lead changes and six ties. The Majors shot 40.3% (27 of 67) from the field, while Trinity shot 35.1% (26 of 74). The Tigers made 10 three-pointers at 33%, keeping the game competitive.
Junior Garin Freeman led Millsaps with 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting, along with eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Elyse Warren recorded a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Junior Tia Anderson also scored 17 points and added eight rebounds. Both Freeman and Anderson played all 40 minutes.
Bailey Johnson scored eight points, added five rebounds and an assist, and opened the scoring with a three-pointer. After Millsaps led 8-2 early, Trinity fought back and took the lead. Johnson assisted Warren in transition for a basket, and Johnson hit another three after Freeman’s drive, keeping the game close.
The second quarter remained competitive, with Trinity hitting a late three at the halftime buzzer to lead 38-34. Freeman scored a late basket in the third quarter, helping Millsaps take a 52-51 lead into the final period. The game remained tight until Freeman’s key plays in the fourth quarter helped push the Majors ahead.
With 4:37 remaining, Freeman’s steal and layup made it 61-56. Anderson then contributed with a three, a steal, and a layup, increasing the lead to 67-59. Trinity responded with a three and some free throws, but Millsaps held on for the 72-66 victory to secure the conference title.
