Millsaps Tennis Sweeps MUW in Sunday Match
The MUW men’s tennis team narrowly lost to Millsaps College, 4-3, in a Sunday afternoon match. Millsaps secured the doubles point by winning two of three doubles matches, including the third doubles match. However, the Owls’ duo of Jorge Ortiz and Juan Garcia improved their doubles record to 2-0 with a 6-2 victory at first doubles.
In singles play, the two teams split the six matches. Millsaps took victories in the Nos. 1 through 3 singles matches, while MUW won Nos. 4 through 6. Marcos Fernandez and Ortiz won their singles matches at fifth and sixth singles, with Fernandez winning 6-1, 6-0, and Ortiz taking a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Alvaro Bardales faced a tough challenge at No. 4 singles, splitting sets before winning a decisive third set 10-6. Bardales lost the first set 6-4, but responded with a 6-4 win and ultimately secured the match with a 10-6 tiebreaker.
The women’s team suffered a complete defeat, falling 7-0 to Millsaps. The Majors won all six singles matches in straight sets and swept all three doubles matches. MUW’s doubles teams made Millsaps work for the wins, especially at second doubles, where Alaina Mathis and Kayleigh Griffin lost 7-5, and at third doubles, where Emma Horton and Harley Lowry fell 6-4.
Both teams will look to improve in their upcoming matches after tough outings against the Majors, according to team sources.
