Millsaps Softball Tops No. 14 Belhaven 3-1 for First Win Since 2017

The Millsaps College softball team defeated No. 14 Belhaven University 3-1 Wednesday night at McLeod Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The win was the Majors’ first over the Blazers since 2017 and marked their second ranked victory of the season, according to team officials.

Senior pitcher Hailey Marange pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. She struck out two batters and issued four walks, throwing 110 pitches, as reported by Millsaps.

Offensively, junior Ella Morgan Sears led the Majors with two hits and scored a run, reaching base via a hit-by-pitch. Classmates Allana Vasquez and Caroline Mathis also contributed, with Vasquez recording a hit, a run, and an RBI, while Mathis added a hit and scored a run as the leadoff hitter.

The game’s decisive inning was the fourth, when Millsaps scored all three runs. Mathis opened with a single, followed by Sears with another hit. Vasquez then loaded the bases with a single to left field. Peterson hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Mathis and giving the Majors a 1-0 lead. Sears and Vasquez scored on throwing errors by Belhaven, which ultimately led to a 3-0 advantage for Millsaps.

Belhaven threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with a walk and a single, but Marange and the defense kept the Blazers off the board. In the seventh, Belhaven’s only run came on a solo home run with two outs. Marange closed the game with a fly out to Sears in center field.

The Majors celebrated their victory by rushing the field after the game. Millsaps is scheduled to host MUW in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Millsaps College Softball Complex, with live video and stats available at gomajors.com.

The college, founded in 1890 in Jackson, Mississippi, is known for its liberal arts education and regional impact. Millsaps has received praise from several national rankings and organizations, including U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, for its academic excellence and value.
