Millsaps Softball Sweeps Season Opener Against Centenary

The Millsaps College softball team opened their season with a doubleheader sweep of Centenary College on Saturday at the Millsaps Softball Complex.

In the first game, Millsaps edged out a 7-6 victory. Junior Allana Vasquez pitched 6.2 innings, striking out seven batters and throwing 111 pitches. Sophomore Hailey Marange secured the final out without allowing a hit. Caroline Mathis led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, including a double. Brynn Arena contributed three hits, a run, and three stolen bases, showcasing her speed. Hailey Peterson added three hits and a stolen base, while Kadence Cannon had two RBIs, two hits, and scored two runs.

The game was competitive from the start. Millsaps scored first in the second inning, then Centenary took a 2-1 lead in the third. The Majors responded with a four-run fourth and added a sixth run in the sixth. In the final inning, Centenary scored four runs to tie the game but Millsaps held on. Mathis scored the walk-off run on a wild pitch after reaching third on a Centenary error.

The second game saw Millsaps win 3-1, thanks to strong pitching and timely hitting. Junior Julie Amacher pitched two hitless innings to earn the win, while sophomore Hailey Marange limited Centenary to five hits over five innings. Offensively, Arena went 3-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Sears recorded three hits and an RBI, and Ava Palumbo drove in a run in the sixth inning to give Millsaps the lead.

The Majors’ defense, led by Amacher, finished strong with a double play and ground out to close out the game. Millsaps will continue their season Saturday with a doubleheader at Huntingdon College. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
