Millsaps Softball Splits Doubleheader at LeTourneau
The Millsaps College softball team split a doubleheader against LeTourneau University on Tuesday at LETU Softball Field in Longview, Texas.
In the first game, LeTourneau won 10-2. Millsaps sophomore Caroline Mathis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Junior Kadence Cannon was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Allana Vasquez pitched two innings, striking out four for the Majors.
The Majors scored twice in the second inning, with singles from freshman Liza Gregg and Cannon setting up an RBI single by Ava Palumbo and a hit by Mathis that brought home Cannon. Despite the early lead, LeTourneau responded with four runs in the bottom of the second and added three more in the third. Millsaps threatened but could not close the gap, eventually falling 10-2 after three more runs by LeTourneau in the fifth inning.
The second game saw Millsaps secure a 4-2 victory. Sophomore Hailey Peterson pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out three. Junior Julie Amacher started and pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and an earned run.
Key offensive contributors for Millsaps included Mathis, who went 3-for-4, and senior Julia Strain, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. In the fourth inning, the Majors scored all four runs with help from a single by Vasquez, a walk to Cannon, a pinch-runner, and a two-run single by Strain. Mathis added an RBI single, extending the lead to 4-1.
LeTourneau scored a run in the bottom of the fourth but was kept from mounting a comeback. Millsaps’s strong pitching and defense preserved the 4-2 win. The Majors are scheduled to face Hendrix College on Thursday in Conway, Arkansas, with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
