Millsaps Softball Earns First Ranked Win Since 2022 with Victory Over Huntingdon
The Millsaps College softball team defeated No. 16 Huntingdon College in the final game of a weekend series at Samford Softball Complex, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since April 2022, according to school officials.
The Majors lost the first two games of the doubleheader on Friday, falling 9-1 in six innings and 4-0. They responded Saturday with an 8-5 victory, overcoming five errors by Huntingdon to secure the win.
In the opening game Friday, Millsaps managed five hits. Junior Ella Morgan Sears, sophomore Hailey Peterson, and sophomore Ava Palumbo each recorded a hit, while junior Allana Vasquez contributed an RBI. Huntingdon took an early 1-0 lead and scored four more runs in the fourth inning before sealing the run-rule victory with four runs in the sixth.
The second game saw Huntingdon’s Addison Gaines dominate on the mound, allowing just one hit with 10 strikeouts. Millsaps scored only once, with sophomore Brynn Arena and senior Julia Strain each recording a hit. Huntingdon scored two runs in the third and one in the sixth to complete the shutout.
The series concluded Saturday with Millsaps’s 8-5 win. The Majors capitalized on five Huntingdon errors, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory. Peterson pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits. Vasquez pitched the final 2.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits.
Millsaps opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, following an error that allowed Vasquez and Caroline Mathis to score. The Hawks tied the game in the third and fourth innings before Millsaps took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Huntingdon responded with two runs in the fifth, but the Majors exploded for four runs in the seventh, including key hits from Arena, Peterson, and Cannon. Huntingdon scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but Millsaps held on for the win.
The team will next face No. 14 Belhaven University at McLeod Field on Tuesday, Feb. 24. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with live video and stats available at gomajors.com.
