Millsaps Men’s Basketball Rallys to Defeat Berry 78-64

The Millsaps College men’s basketball team defeated Berry College 78-64 Thursday night inside the Hangar Dome in Jackson, Mississippi. Millsaps (14-10, 5-8 Southern Athletic Association) trailed by one at halftime but outscored Berry (9-15, 5-8 SAA) 46-31 in the second half.

The Majors capitalized on 12 steals and scored 18 points off turnovers. They also dominated inside the paint, tallying 46 points in the area. Berry kept the game close early with eight three-pointers but was unable to sustain the effort in the final minutes.

Junior Cameron Lumar scored 14 points, grabbed two steals, and played a gritty game. Junior David Combest Jr. added 15 points, going 9-for-10 at the free-throw line, and finished with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jaxon Toney was perfect from the field, scoring 15 points on six shots, and added five rebounds, one block, an assist, and a steal. Junior Davion James contributed 12 points, two steals, four rebounds, and an assist.

The game opened with Millsaps taking an early lead, but Berry responded with a series of jump shots and three-pointers to go ahead by nine points with 6:16 remaining in the first half. Millsaps trimmed the deficit with a late jumper from James, ending the half down 33-32.

The Majors took control early in the second half with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a layup from Rodney Phillips Jr. and a jumper from Lumar. Toney extended the lead to 44-38 with a spinning layup. With 7:52 left, Phillips Jr. assisted Lumar for a basket that put Millsaps ahead.

The crowd energized when junior Colt Donley found Toney for an alley-oop dunk, making it 67-58 with 3:33 remaining. Kent responded with a layup, but Toney sealed the game with a free-throw line jumper. Millsaps will host Oglethorpe University on Saturday for Senior Day, with festivities following the women’s game.
