Millsaps Men’s Basketball Edges Southwestern 72-69 in Paint-Dominant Game

The Millsaps men’s basketball team defeated Southwestern University 72-69 Friday at the Corbin J. Robertson Center in Georgetown, Texas. The Majors improved to 12-8 overall and 3-6 in the Southern Athletic Association.

Millsaps held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint and grabbed 51 rebounds to help secure the win. Southwestern kept the game close with seven three-pointers and a strong second half, but the Majors maintained their lead in the final minutes.

Senior Caleb Kent led Millsaps with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and eight rebounds. Junior David Combest Jr. scored 14 points, hitting six of eight free throws and matching Kent with eight rebounds. Junior Davion James contributed nine points, three steals and three assists, while Jaxon Toney added 12 points, making four of five field goals and four of six free throws.

The game was tightly contested from the start, with seven ties and 11 lead changes in the first half. Millsaps took a narrow 38-31 lead into halftime after a late first-half surge, including a three-pointer by Cameron Lumar assisted by James.

In the second half, Millsaps extended its lead early with layups from Combest Jr. and Colt Donley, reaching 42-31. Southwestern responded, but Millsaps stayed ahead with key plays from Toney and Combest Jr., ultimately sealing the win with a defensive rebound by Lumar in the final seconds.
