Millsaps Men’s Basketball Beats Southwestern 83-73
The Millsaps College men’s basketball team secured an 83-73 victory over Southwestern University inside the Hangar Dome on Friday night. The Majors built a commanding 46-23 lead by halftime, thanks to efficient shooting and aggressive defense, according to team sources.
Millsaps shot 45 percent from the field in the first half, while Southwestern struggled with just 7 percent on three-pointers. The Pirates scored 50 second-half points but could not erase their early deficit. The Majors improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. Southwestern now holds a 7-8 record overall and is 1-3 in league play.
Junior Davion James led Millsaps with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while shooting 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Senior Caleb Kent added 17 points and three assists, and junior Jaxon Toney contributed 17 points, four blocks, six rebounds and a steal. Toney was efficient from the floor, making 7-of-8 shots.
Senior Dakota Gasca facilitated the offense with six assists and three steals. Junior Colt Donley chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. The Majors opened strong on defense, forcing 11 turnovers and securing eight steals in the first half. A 14-0 run midway through the first half pushed the lead to 21-8, and Millsaps maintained control through the second half.
Despite Southwestern’s efforts to rally, Millsaps extended its lead with key three-pointers from Toney and Gasca. Toney’s trey made it 68-60 with 7:32 remaining, and Gasca followed with a long-range shot that put the game out of reach at 71-63 with under five minutes to play. Clutch free throws and a dunk from Donley in the final seconds sealed the victory.
