Millsaps Baseball Edges Centenary 3-2 on St. Patrick’s Day

The Millsaps College baseball team beat Centenary College 3-2 Tuesday at Twenty Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The game was played on St. Patrick’s Day, with players wearing green hats.

Junior Wesley Grant went 3-for-3 with one RBI, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base. Freshman Thomas Temple contributed two hits and two RBIs. Senior EJ Ousley added two hits for the Majors, according to team reports.

On the mound, Millsaps used nine pitchers preparing for the upcoming conference series against Trinity University starting Friday. Freshman Jackson Devey threw one inning with two strikeouts. Dylon Lozano earned his first collegiate win after pitching 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or run. Senior Andrew Bradley secured the save by pitching the ninth inning, facing no hits and keeping the Gents scoreless.

The game’s first run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Temple singled to shortstop, bringing home senior Mason Morgan with the bases loaded. In the sixth, Millsaps extended its lead to 2-0 after a wild pitch allowed Wes Carr to reach third. Grant then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Carr.

Centenary responded in the seventh, scoring two runs to tie the game at 2-2. A groundout to third with bases loaded brought a runner home, and later, a groundout allowed a runner to score after a brief rally. Millsaps prevented the Gents from taking the lead with a final groundout in that inning.

In the eighth, Millsaps regained the lead when Carr walked, Grant singled, and sophomore Kyle Veal Jr. was intentionally walked to load the bases. Temple then hit a fielder’s choice, outrunning a double play attempt to score Carr for the go-ahead run. Bradley finished the game with a strong ninth inning, forcing a fly out and a groundout to close out the win.

The Majors will open conference play Friday with a doubleheader against Trinity in San Antonio, Texas, starting at 5 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com. Fans can follow Millsaps baseball on X and Instagram or like Millsaps Majors Athletics on Facebook for updates.
