Mercer Dominates Alcorn in 25-2 Baseball Win
MACON, Ga. — Mercer’s baseball team scored 25 runs to beat Alcorn State 25-2 on Sunday at OrthoGeorgia Park, completing a three-game sweep of the series. The Bears improved to 14-2 with the win, while the Braves fell to 2-13 this season, according to team reports.
Mercer jumped ahead early, with designated hitter Braydon Kersey hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. The Bears then scored six runs in both the second and third innings, opening a commanding lead. In the second, Parker Dastou drove in a run with a single, and Kersey’s double cleared the bases. Eli Stephens added a run-scoring single, making it 8-0.
In the third inning, Mercer’s offense continued to excel. After starting pitcher Yoni Castro was replaced by Myles Dews, Nicholas Johnson entered in relief. Stephens hit a three-run home run in that inning, pushing Mercer’s lead to 14-0.
Alcorn managed to score two runs in the fourth inning, with Jaylyn Bennett doubling and scoring on a wild pitch, and Asher Friedman adding an RBI single. Mercer responded with four runs in the bottom half, then sealed the game with a seven-run sixth inning that featured walks, hit batters, and timely hitting.
Mercer’s Jess Ackerman earned the win in relief, throwing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Alcorn’s Yoni Castro took the loss after surrendering eight runs over two innings. Bennett led the Braves at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, while Friedman added an RBI.
Alcorn’s coach Carlton Hardy expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rebound. The Braves are scheduled to play at Northwestern State on Tuesday at 6 p.m., according to team officials.
