Lyon College edges Mississippi University for Women in SLIAC baseball showdown
Lyon College edged Mississippi University for Women 5-4 in a Saturday SLIAC baseball game in Batesville, Arkansas. The victory marked the Owls’ first league loss after a 6-0 start in conference play, while Lyon improved to 7-0 in SLIAC and 12-5 overall, according to game reports.
The game was a pitchers’ duel through the first seven innings. Lyon starter Aiden Linson limited MUW to one unearned run, striking out six before leaving with one out in the eighth. Mississippi University for Women’s pitchers combined for five strikeouts and no walks over the first seven frames, with Josh Mackey going three innings and Will Carter pitching three shutout innings in relief.
In the eighth, Lyon took the lead with a two-run double by designated hitter Baron Brack, which drove in two runs and put the Scots ahead 4-2. The Owls responded in the bottom half, tying the game at 4-4 after a single, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and a two-run double by Brack. Lyon scored the go-ahead run in the ninth when Landon Swallow homered over the left-field fence off reliever Campbell McCluney.
MUW threatened in the bottom of the ninth but went out in order after a leadoff single. The Owls out-hit Lyon 7-5 but fell short in the final score. The teams will meet again on April 21 for the second and third games of their series.
Mississippi University for Women is scheduled to travel to Louisville, Kentucky, on March 28-29 for a three-game series at Spalding University, according to team schedules.
