Louisiana beats Southern Miss 9-1 to even series
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Louisiana’s softball team defeated Southern Miss 9-1 Saturday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The win evened the series after the Golden Eagles took the opener Friday.
The Ragin’ Cajuns jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. They added one run in the second and five in the third. Southern Miss managed to score in the third inning on an RBI single by Jolie Hays, but the rally was not enough.
Southern Miss finished with seven hits and stranded 10 runners. Hannah Christian led off with a single and later was stranded. The Golden Eagles had at least one hit in each of the five innings, including two in the fourth, but Louisiana’s defense kept them from mounting a comeback.
Madilyn Graham took the loss for Southern Miss after allowing three runs in the first inning. Relief pitchers Briley Whittington and Olivia Christian each pitched two innings. Louisiana’s Bethaney Noble earned the win, improving her record to 6-2.
The two teams will meet again Sunday at noon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex for the series finale. Following that game, Southern Miss will travel to UNC Greensboro for a midweek contest before hosting a Sun Belt series at Appalachian State, according to school officials.
