Kynard Leads Mississippi Valley State in SWAC Softball Doubleheader Losses
ITTA BENA, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University’s softball team opened SWAC action with a pair of home losses Thursday, falling 15-2 and 10-1 to Alabama State in five-inning games.
The Hornets improved to 8-16 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Devilettes dropped to 1-10 and remain winless in SWAC play. Alabama State leads the series history 73-46, with the Hornets riding a 17-game winning streak against Mississippi Valley State.
Sheridan Kynard was the standout for the Devilettes, recording a triple, a walk, and scoring two runs in the first game. Michelle Diaz drove in both of Kynard’s runs via singles and a Hornets error, also stealing a base. Kynard continued her offensive success in the second game, going 2-for-3 with two singles. Diaz accounted for all three RBIs in the second game, bringing around Ashtyn Clark, who had a single and a walk.
Other notable performances included Kelsey Kaluna-Thomas, who added a single in each game, and Madison Wesley, who drew a walk and advanced on the bases. Madison Bruce struck out three Hornets in relief during the second contest. Taniya Partee was the only player to record both a hit and a walk in the doubleheader.
