Kennedee Shelton scores career-high 22 points as Delta State women beat West Florida
Weronika Kaczmarska scored 22 points to lead Delta State University’s women’s basketball team as it extended its winning streak to four games with a 78-65 victory over West Florida on Saturday at Sillers Coliseum.
The Lady Statesmen led for more than 32 minutes in a game featuring 10 lead changes. They built a strong second quarter and finished with a decisive fourth-quarter run to pull away from the Argonauts.
Delta State outscored West Florida 25-19 in the second quarter to take a 44-37 lead at halftime. The hosts then closed the game with a 20-8 run in the final 10 minutes, including key baskets from Williamson and free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Delta State’s largest lead was 13 points in the final minute.
The Lady Statesmen shot 25-for-60 (42%) from the field and were 23-for-27 at the free-throw line (85%). They also forced 15 turnovers and scored 23 points off those mistakes, while bench players contributed 31 points.
Shelton, a senior guard, finished with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting and went 8-for-9 at the foul line. She also added four rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes. Williamson scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Olivia Allen contributed eight points, including two three-pointers. Dakiya Toney provided an early spark with eight points and three rebounds.
Delta State will next play on the road against Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 5:30 p.m., as part of a two-game Gulf South Conference road trip.
