Jorge Ortiz makes history as first Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Jorge Ortiz of Mississippi University for Women has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division Player of the Week, marking the first time a men’s tennis player from the school has received the award since joining the league in 2023-24.

First-year head coach Hayden Embry called the achievement “special,” adding that it is “unforgettable” to have a player earn the conference honor for the first time in school history. Embry praised Ortiz, saying, “Jorge has earned every bit of it. We’re proud of him and motivated to continue this record-breaking season.”

Ortiz, who plays No. 1 doubles and singles, helped the Owls secure a 6-1 victory over LaGrange College last Friday on the road. He and partner Sandro Giangregario defeated the Panthers’ doubles team 6-0, improving their record to 2-0 this season. In singles, Ortiz defeated LaGrange’s Mike Strydom in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The W men’s tennis program has never won more than two matches in a season during its seven-year history. The team, now 2-2 in the 2025-26 season, is set to face Belhaven University on Thursday in Jackson, Mississippi, as they aim to build on their early success.
