Jorge Ortiz Catala Named UMAC South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Columbus, Miss. — Junior Jorge Ortiz Catala of The W has been named the UMAC South Division Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for March 16-22, 2026, the conference announced Monday.
This is the second time this season Ortiz Catala has received the weekly honor. He previously earned the award from Feb. 8-15, 2026. MUW head coach Hayden Embry praised his player, calling him a leader and noting his impact on the team’s success.
Ortiz Catala, from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, played No. 1 doubles and singles during the team’s 6-1 victory over Principia College last Friday. It marked the program’s first win over Principia and only its second conference victory in school history. It also was the first conference match hosted by MUW at Garrett Courts.
He teamed with Sandro Giangregario to win doubles, 6-2, and then defeated Jesus Sotyo Bossa in singles, 6-4, 6-2. The win was Ortiz Catala’s fourth consecutive in singles, improving his season record to 5-1. He is also 6-2 in doubles play this season.
The Owls are set to face Greenville University in the UMAC South preseason favorite match this Friday in Greenville, Illinois, at 3 p.m.
