Jones splits with Kirkwood in NJCAA Top 10 softball doubleheader

ELLISVILLE, Miss. — Jones College and Kirkwood (Iowa) split a doubleheader Monday at Community Bank Park. The No. 4-ranked Jones Eagles won the opener 7-2, while the No. 10-ranked Kirkwood Bobcats took the nightcap 4-2.

In the first game, Madison Sawyer pitched for Jones, allowing six hits and striking out six to improve her record to 3-0. Jones took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Claire Andersen. The Eagles broke the game open in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Chloe Jenkins drove in three runs with a double, and Addy Shorter added an RBI single.

Kirkwood’s Reese Stockman homered in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-1. Andersen scored again in the sixth, and Breckin De La Rosa hit a solo home run in the seventh for Kirkwood’s final run. Jones’s Ada Wood took the loss, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings.

In the second game, Kirkwood scored two unearned runs early and added two more in the seventh to secure the win. Morgan Landry pitched for the Bobcats, allowing four hits and two runs over seven innings, with six strikeouts. Kirkwood’s De La Rosa went 2-for-3, and Reiners doubled for the Bobcats.

Jones (7-1) heads to Alabama this weekend for the Coastal Alabama Coyote Classic, facing teams including Enterprise State and Gulf Coast State. Kirkwood (2-4) continues its Mississippi swing with games at Hinds, Meridian, and Holmes throughout the weekend.
