Jones Splits Doubleheader at Hinds, Moves to 11-2

RAYMOND, Miss. — Jones College’s baseball team split a doubleheader at Hinds Community College on Tuesday. The Bobcats lost the opening game 8-4 before rebounding with a 7-3 win over East Mississippi, according to team reports.

In the first game, Chase Russell hit his team-leading fifth home run in the first inning. Despite the early lead, Hinds scored the final five runs to claim the victory. Ethan Keen hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Jones retook the lead in the second inning thanks to wild pitches and productive at-bats, including Kelan Guidry’s two-RBI single. However, Brody Breithaupt’s two-run double in the third gave Hinds the lead for good. Jones pitcher Brayson Graham took the loss, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings, while Trevor Hodges pitched 3.2 innings of relief. Tyler West earned the win for Hinds, scattering four runs over five innings with five strikeouts.

In the second game, Jones’s Gage Reeves hit his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning to help extend the lead. Drew Lambert pitched 4.2 innings for the win, his third career victory. Jones opened the scoring in the fourth inning, with Sanders Ainsworth’s sacrifice fly and Russell’s groundout giving the team a 2-0 edge. The Bobcats added a run in the fifth on an Ainsworth RBI-single and then a three-run homer by Reeves extended their lead to 7-1. East Mississippi scored twice on a Jonas Coleman double but could get no closer. Reliever Russ Thompson entered with bases loaded and struck out the only batter he faced to end the threat. Jones improved to 11-2 on the season and will host Coastal Alabama-South on Thursday at 2 p.m. for a single game.
